How to Care for Weft Hair Extensions After Installation

You’ve got the longer or fuller-looking hair you were hoping for. Now you want it to stay beautiful without spending every morning fighting tangles or worrying about the attachments.

Good weft extension aftercare helps you enjoy your new style and look after the natural hair underneath. The exact routine depends on how your wefts were fitted and what type of hair was used, but these practical habits are a useful place to start.

First, know which type of weft you have

A weft is a strip of added hair joined along a seam. It can be fitted in different ways, including sewn onto a braided foundation or attached to a beaded row. Some products are removable clip-ins.

That difference matters. A product or brushing technique that’s suitable for one attachment method may catch, loosen or damage another. Ask your stylist to show you where the attachments sit and how to care for them before you leave the salon.

If you’re new to wefts, our guide to weft extensions and fitting methods explains the basics.

1. Brush your weft extensions without pulling at the roots

Gentle detangling can help keep added hair looking smooth and avoid turning a small knot into a frustrating one.

Use a brush or comb recommended for your extension hair and fitting method. Separate the hair into manageable sections, support the length near the attachment and work carefully from the ends upwards. Don’t drag a brush through the weft seam, rings or stitching.

If you find a stubborn tangle, stop and work through it slowly. Pulling harder isn’t the answer. Ask your stylist how often your type of hair needs brushing and which tool is safest around the attachments.

2. Wash your hair and scalp, not just the visible extensions

Your scalp still produces oil and collects sweat and product residue even when you’re wearing extensions. Keeping it clean can make the style feel fresher and more comfortable.

Before washing, gently detangle the lengths if your stylist recommends it. Use a suitable shampoo and carefully cleanse the scalp around the extension rows with your fingertips. Avoid rough rubbing or bunching the hair together. Rinse thoroughly so products don’t sit around the attachments.

Apply conditioner where it’s appropriate for your extension hair. Some attachment systems need you to avoid conditioner or oily products near bonds, beads or seams, so follow the instructions for your fitting method. Don’t assume the same routine works for every weft.

There’s no universal rule for how often you should wash extensions. Your scalp, activity level, hair type and attachment method all matter.

3. Dry the roots and attachment areas properly

It can be tempting to leave thick extensions damp after a shower, especially when you’re in a hurry. But water can remain around the braids, rows or attachment points long after the outer lengths feel dry.

Gently squeeze out excess water instead of twisting or rubbing your hair with a towel. Ask your stylist how to dry the installation thoroughly and safely. Where a hairdryer is appropriate, use a comfortable setting and follow the guidance for the hair and attachment method.

Try not to go to bed with wet wefts or a damp foundation. Proper drying helps limit tangling and keeps the scalp more comfortable.

4. Style your weft extensions with care

One of the lovely things about added hair is having more styling options. You might want soft waves for dinner, a smooth everyday look or a loose ponytail that shows off the extra length.

Before reaching for a straightener or curling wand, check what the extension hair can tolerate. Human hair and synthetic fibres differ, and not every product is suitable for heat styling. Even human hair can become dry or damaged with too much heat.

If heat styling is permitted, use a suitable heat protectant and the lowest effective temperature. Keep hot tools away from attachment points. Avoid pulling the hair into tight updos that tug on the roots.

Ask which hairsprays, oils and leave-in products suit your installation rather than relying on blanket rules that ban or recommend particular products.

5. Protect your extensions while you sleep

A few minutes before bed can make your morning easier. Gently detangle as instructed and gather the lengths into a loose braid or another comfortable style, if suitable for your extensions.

A satin bonnet, scarf or smooth pillowcase may help reduce rubbing and tangling overnight. Don’t tie the hair so tightly that it pulls on the weft or your hairline.

The goal is to wake up with hair that’s easier to manage, not to put extra strain on your scalp while you sleep.

6. Keep an eye on your scalp and natural hair

Extensions can add the appearance of length and fullness, but they also add weight. Your natural hair carries that weight at the attachment points.

Your installation shouldn’t cause ongoing pain, headaches, bumps or painful pulling. If you notice those signs, contact your stylist promptly. Repeated tension can contribute to breakage and traction-related hair loss.

This matters especially if your hair is already fragile or thinning. A fuller-looking style can feel wonderful, but extensions don’t treat the cause of hair loss. Seek advice from a qualified health professional for new or unexplained thinning or scalp problems.

7. Book maintenance before the extensions become a problem

As your natural hair grows, the weft’s attachment points change position. Some installations need adjustment or refitting, while removable extensions need a different routine.

Ask your stylist when the rows should be checked, how to recognise slipping or tangling and when the hair should be removed. The suitable timing depends on the method, the condition of your hair and how the style is holding up.

Don’t try to tighten beads or cut out a sew-in without knowing how it was fitted. Incorrect removal can damage your own hair. Our weft installation guide explains useful questions to ask before fitting and maintenance.

How to make your new look easier to live with

The best aftercare routine is one you can follow. If you swim often, exercise regularly or prefer wearing your hair up for work, tell your stylist. They can explain how those habits might affect washing, drying and styling.

Choosing the right length and amount of hair at the start also helps. Extensions that look beautiful but feel too heavy or take more time than you can manage may not be the right fit. Our guide to choosing weft length and volume can help you think through that balance.

Frequently asked questions about weft extension aftercare

Can I wash my weft extensions like normal hair?

You can usually clean your hair and scalp while wearing fitted wefts, but the technique and products depend on the attachment method and the extension hair. Ask your stylist how to wash around the rows and dry them thoroughly.

Can I sleep with wet weft extensions?

It’s best to avoid going to bed with damp wefts or a wet braided foundation. Ask how to dry your particular installation properly after washing.

How long will my weft hair last?

There’s no guaranteed lifespan. Hair quality, fitting method, daily care and maintenance all affect how long the extensions remain suitable. The added hair may sometimes be reused, but the fitting still needs regular checks.

Are weft extensions damage-free?

No extension method is guaranteed to be damage-free. Excess weight, tight fitting, neglected maintenance or rough removal can cause breakage. Tell your stylist if the installation feels painful or pulls on your hairline.

What if my weft starts slipping or tangling near the roots?

Don’t pull at the row or try to repair it with household tools. Contact the stylist who fitted it and ask for advice or a maintenance appointment.
